MEDIA RELEASE

LABOR TO RESTORE BUSHLAND HABITAT FOR BLACK COCKATOOS

The Federal Member for Swan, Zaneta Mascarenhas, has today announced that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will commit $500,000 to restoring bushland and native habitat for endangered and rare species, including the Black Cockatoo.

This election commitment will support the transformation of the Kent Street Sand Pit site into Banksia Woodland, providing vital habitat for native fauna and valuable recreational and educational opportunities for local residents and visitors.

Located within the beautiful Jirdarup Bushland Precinct, the Kent Street Sand Pit site — a former landfill — will be reimagined into a thriving natural resource for the community and a sanctuary for some of Western Australia’s most precious and endangered species.

This election commitment highlights the Albanese Labor Government’s dedication to protecting endangered and rare species and restoring our natural environment in Swan.

Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

Quotes attributable to Zaneta Mascarenhas MP, Federal Member for Swan:

“This is an underutilised piece of land so close to the city.

“With this funding, we’ll create an urban oasis that brings more birds back to the area and increases our local tree canopy.

“Alongside Federal Labor’s investment in rehabilitating and restoring the Swan and Canning Rivers, this project is about protecting our natural environment for future generations.

“Only a re-elected Albanese Labor Government can be trusted to protect our endangered and rare species.”
